It’s worth pointing out that Amerigo Gazaway is one of the world’s best at using the connections between two artists’ bodies of work to make new art by putting their songs in a new context, and he wins an award from us just about every year he releases something. A Common Wonder is the latest release in Gazaway’s ongoing Soul Mates Project, in which he uses all of his remixing skills to create tracks from studio collaborations that never happened. This one, combining Stevie Wonder and Common, bends that rule a bit, because Wonder has worked with Common (Wonder appeared on the title track from Common’s 2016 LP Black America Again), but these superbly crafted mash-ups are all Gazaway’s work, offering a timely message about the powerful contributions of African-American art to American culture.
